Sui generis

So we had some fantastic food at Not Your Average Joe's in Acton. It's pretty inexpensive, the atmosphere is noisy (we don't mind), and normally the service has been first-rate.

Until tonight. We're not accustomed to the waitress with an eight-second timer who has the big smile and the insincere "is everything okay?" on every trip, and who zooms off to presumably more important things.

Who is also the waitress to whom you make the ordinary request for water in addition to the wine, and who never serves it.

I calculate we interacted with out waitress 47 seconds of our hour-and-a-quarter stay.

Sadly, for the first time in more than a decade and a half, we left a tip of less than twenty percent.
